Envoy: Ukraine Pursuing Independent Position on Sanctions against Iran
“Ukraine tries not to tie its interests with the interests of foreign hegemonic groups and strives to pursue an independent and balanced view,” Qassemi told FNA, reiterating that Kyiv doesn’t comply with the extremist stances of certain western countries.
There are two types of countries in the world; the first group are those mostly consisting of the permanent UN Security Council members and the western members of the Council which accompany the unilateral sanctions against Iran; and the second group are the independent states and the members of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) which oppose compliance with the West’s unilateral embargos against Tehran, he said.
“And Ukraine stands among the second group,” Qassemi stated.
Despite the rules enshrined in the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) entitling every member state, including Iran, to the right of uranium enrichment, Tehran is now under four rounds of UN Security Council sanctions and the western unilateral embargos for turning down West’s calls to give up its right of uranium enrichment.
Tehran has dismissed West’s demands as politically tainted and illogical, stressing that sanctions and pressures merely consolidate Iranians’ national resolve to continue the path.
Political observers believe that the United States has remained at loggerheads with Iran mainly over the independent and home-grown nature of Tehran’s nuclear technology, which gives the Islamic Republic the potential to turn into a world power and a role model for the other third-world countries.
