Dynamo end six-year wait for Ukrainian crown – News – UEFA.com
FC Dynamo Kyiv have been crowned Ukrainian champions for the first time since 2008/09 after beating FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk 1-0 at home to wrap up the title with two games to spare.
Dnipro clinched their place in the UEFA Europa League final after a historic win against SSC Napoli on Thursday, and coach Myron Markevych opted to rest a number of players for their trip to the capital. The hosts dominated proceedings throughout, but they had to wait to make the difference, Croatian full-back Domagoj Vida finding the net on 84 minutes with his second goal of the league campaign.
Serhiy Rebrov’s men saw out the rest of the match to secure their 14th crown since independence, having won 13 titles in the former Soviet Union. They also ended FC Shakhtar Donetsk’s hold on the Ukrainian game, their great rivals having finished on top in the last five seasons. Shakhtar are nonetheless well placed to claim a spot in UEFA Champions League qualifying as they lie five points clear of Dnipro.
“It was an extremely hard season,” said Rebrov, who took over the reins last May. “It’s really good that we claimed gold in front of our fans. I can say that it’s much harder to win as a coach. Now the main task is to keep all the leaders who helped us win the title, but we need talented newcomers as well.”
“I want to thank the fans as they kept believing in us during all the hard times,” added goalkeeper Olexandr Shovkovskiy. “And I want to wish Dnipro good luck in the Europa League final – we will definitely support them.”
