Amnesty International did not find any compelling evidence of mass killings or mass graves with 400 bodies, Dalhuisen emphasised. What they saw, he said, are isolated cases of summary executions that must be further investigated to identify and prosecute whoever was responsible.
Dalhuisen emphasised that while summary killings are undeniably being committed by pro-Russian separatists and pro-Kyiv forces in Eastern Ukraine, the reports coming from the local media were magnified. The Russian media is exaggerating the reporting to serve the purpose of propaganda, Dalhuisen said. He suspected that other cases have not yet exposed while others have been deliberately misrecorded. What Dalhuisen suggest for the warring sides is to instead of speculating and accusing each other of the executions, both sides should investigate internally within their groups as to who among their members are guilty of such atrocities.
In line with this, Amnesty International confirmed that there were detainees killed by pro-Russian insurgent groups since the start of the conflict in April 2014. The proof of that is the discovery of two bodies identified as Volodymyr Rybak, a local pro-Ukrainian activist and Yury Popravko, a student from Kyiv. Their bodies show signs of violent tortures. The organisation also confirms that two detainees were also killed in the police detention facility in Severodonetsk, Luhansk Region.
“At 4.30 am a fighter woke us, shouting “Up! Evacuation!” They opened three or four cell doors, and in all I heard six to eight gunshots. It was like roulette – some were shot, some released, some taken away,” a businessman held captive in the detention told Amnesty International.
