Kyiv/Moscow (dpa) – Lysenko told reporters in Kyiv that the high number of injured was due to the use of imprecise “Grad” artillery systems by the separatist rebels, the Interfax Ukraine news agency reported.
The government in Kyiv accuses Russia of supplying the separatists with heavy weapons and fighters.
The rebels, in turn, accuse government forces of firing “Grad” missiles on civilian quarters in the cities of Donetsk and Luhansk.
Four civilians were killed and 18 injured in artillery attacks on Donetsk, the regional government said late Thursday. Luhansk authorities warned that the situation in the city was critical because water, electricity and communication systems remain cut off for the sixth consecutive day.
The violence comes as Russia retaliated against Western sanctions over the conflict by banning a wide range of food products from the European Union, the United States, Canada, Norway and Australia.
The West accuses Russia of arming the separatists who are believed to have shot down a Malaysia Airlines passenger jet with 298 people on board last month.
Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott criticized Moscow over the food ban.
Abbott said on ABC television Friday that Russia should stop bullying Ukraine. He said Australia refrained from taking action against Moscow when the mission to recover remains at the MH17 crash site was under way but would now consider tougher sanctions with its allies in the West.
“Russia is a big country trying to bully a small country,” Abbott said. “I say to President Putin, if he wants to be regarded as a world leader, as opposed to becoming an international outcast, hold your forces back, stay behind the border and let the business of Ukraine be sorted out by the Ukrainians.”
Putin is expected to attend a summit of the world‘s 20 biggest economies in Australia in November.
Poland, which is hard hit by Russia‘s import ban, said that it would file a complaint with the World Trade Organization. Agriculture Minister Marek Sawicki said in a TV interview that the ban violates international law.
