Cinema for Ukrainian movies opens in Kyiv

A cinema which will exclusively show Ukrainian movies was opened in Kyiv on February 26, with the cooperation of the Kyivkinofilm company and Ukrainian moviemakers.The cinema was opened based on Chapayev cinema on 40 Velyka Zhytomyrska Street.

According to the press service, the National Union of Filmmakers of Ukraine and Kyivkinofilm addressed the Kyiv mayor’s office with an initiative to bring back the cinema’s historical name  “Lira.””Lira’s” program will consist of over 50 Ukrainian movies that have been made recently. The majority of them won Ukrainian State Film Agency contests and were created with the financial support of the state.Built in 1913, Chapayev Cinema is the oldest working cinema in Kyiv. Its first name was “Lira,” but the cinema was renamed in 1937.
