Kyiv celebrated its 1,530th birthday last weekend with an impressive array of festivals, contests and concerts all around the city. The celebrations started early on May 26 with a bicycle parade. The outdoor Pyrohovo museum, just outside Kyiv, hosted a kite festival from 11 a.m. till 5 p.m. A gala concert that featured Ukrainian stars of classical music started at 8 p.m. Saturday on Sofiyivska Square
Sunday’s celebrations included a traditional charitable “Race Under the Chestnuts” on Mykhailivska Square. A roller skating championship was held in Obolon from 9 a.m.
Spivoche Pole Park, located on the hills of Dnipro River close to Pecherska Lavra, hosted folk and art festivals and a fair started at 3 p.m.
The celebrations ended with a fireworks display on Obolonska Naberezhna at 9:30 p.m.
