MOSCOW: Russian gas giant Gazprom on Tuesday fired off a new salvo in Moscow’s feud with Ukraine by demanding some $2.5 billion for Kyiv allegedly breaching its supply contract. Gazprom said in a statement that under the terms of its deal with Ukraine state firm Naftogaz, Kyiv had to buy a minimum annual amount of gas from them or face a penalty and that supplies had fallen short of the required level in the third quarter of last year. “Taking this (minimum level) into account and the volume of gas delivered by Gazprom to Ukraine in the third quarter of 2015, Naftogaz Ukraine has been sent a bill for $2.549 billion,” the statement said. “Gazprom is waiting for the bill to be settled in the next 10 days,” it said.

Almost 300 Ukrainian towns were left without power on Tuesday while snowdrifts and blizzards trapped hundreds of vehicles and dozens of ambulances across the former Soviet state. Ukraine’s emergency service said most of the outages were recorded on Monday evening and urgent repair works were underway. It did not disclose how many homes or people were left without power. But the service said its teams had rescued 322 people from 148 vehicles on Monday in the Black Sea region of Odessa alone.
They also pulled out 42 ambulances and two passenger buses from snowdrifts that have been hitting the eastern region of Kharkiv since the weekend. The weather forecast centre predicted more clement weather in the days ahead. But night temperatures in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv were still expected to plunge to minus 15 degrees Celsius (5 degrees Farenheit) into the start of next week.

Andriyivskiy descent is one of the most popular and beautiful places in Kyiv and you should definitely come here during your visit. This street, which connects lower and middle Kyiv, has a lot to offer – Andriyivska church, Kyiv hills, historical buildings, secret backyards, cozy cafes and lots of artisan crafts. I love this street but it can get quite crowded over the weekends, and you are after something only locals know, right?
