Canadian delegation in Ukraine as situation intensifies

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird is with a Canadian delegation in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, where he’s showing Canada’s support for that country’s transition to democracy.

He announced Friday that Canada would be providing $200,000 in medical aid for Ukrainians caught in violence.

Baird visited Kyiv’s main square to pay tribute to the dozens of Ukrainians killed in last week’s anti-government protests.

He’s expected to speak with Ukraine’s new prime minister, Arseny Yatseniuk.

Ukraine’s parliament has asked the UN Security council to consider the country’s political turmoil. They passed a resolution calling for a security council session amid growing tension in the southern Crimea region.

It’s there where two airports have been seized by armed men.

Ousted president Viktor Yanukovych will speak at a news conference Friday morning.

This will be his first public appearance since being ousted last weekend.
