Boryspil opens new terminal for Euro 2012

The President of the Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych, has officially opened a new 15 million capacity international terminal Kyiv’s Boryspil International Airport.

The 107,000sqm Terminal D will provide the lynchpin in Boryspil’s efforts to handle the record passenger traffic expected during the finals of the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship (EURO 2012). It will then be used to handle passenger growth into the next decade.

Construction of the $600 million terminal began in 2008 and the facility boasts 11 jet bridges enabling it to handle up to six large aircraft and five medium sized jets at any given time.

The new terminal is also equipped with travelators and a baggage handling system capable of handling 3,000 items of luggage per hour.

Cutting the ribbon, Yanukovych said the facility was “another small victory” for the Ukraine as it continues to develop its transport infrastructure in preparation for the influx of visitors during the games.

The Ukraine has built new terminals in all of its host cities for the tournament – Donetsk, Kharkiv, and Lviv as well as in the second airport in Kyiv – Zhuliany International Airport.
