30-meter Ukrainian flag unfurled in Kyiv for Unity Day

Marking 1919 deal between the Ukrainian People’s Republic and West Ukrainian People’s Republic

Dozens of Ukrainians sporting blue and yellow have formed a human chain on Kyiv’s Paton Bridge crossing the Dnieper River. A massive national flag was also unfurled for the occasion.

The day marks an agreement signed on January 22, 1919 between the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the West Ukrainian People’s Republic, aimed at creating a unified state.

The occasion has been marked since 1999 after then-President Leonid Kuchma signed a decree declaring it ‘Day of Reunion of Ukraine’.
