Moscow (dpa) – A commander of the pro-Russian separatists in eastern
Ukraine has been killed in an attack on his car, stoking fresh
tensions between the government in Kyiv and the rebels, Russian news
agencies reported Sunday.
Alexei Mozgovoi, a leader of the Prizrak, or ghost, battalion, was
ambushed, his car blown up and sprayed with machine-gun fire near
Alchevsk, the Tass news agency said late Saturday.
Six other people died in the attack in the eastern region of Luhansk.
The separatists claim that Ukrainian special forces were behind the
attack, while the pro-Western government in Kyiv has rejected the
allegations.
There have been several attempts to kill Mozgovoi in the past, Tass
reported.
The Prizrak battalion was involved in some of the fiercest fighting
in the region of Luhansk when the pro-Russian uprising broke out.
An official in the president‘s office in Kyiv said that Mozgovoi was
the victim of a power struggle among the separatists. Igor
Plotnitsky, the head of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People‘s
Republic, acknowledged that there had been differences with Mozgovoi,
but blamed Kyiv for his death.
More than 6,000 people have died in eastern Ukraine since fighting
between pro-Russian rebels and the Ukrainian military erupted in
April last year, according to estimates by the United Nations.
