134 People Arrested after Clash over Control of Ukrainian Factory

KYIV – Ukrainian police arrested 134 people on Tuesday for taking part in an armed clash at a candy factory in the Zhytomyr region, whose ownership is disputed by two oligarchs.

The agents seized grenades, gas pistols, bullets and shells, knives, metal bars and sticks from the detainees, Ukrainian police reported.

The confrontation occurred early morning when the factory management reported an attempted armed assault on the facility.

During the police response, there was fighting between the two sides in the conflict.

About 60 people, police said, broke into the factory intending to gain control.

Authorities arrested 134 people from at least six regions of Ukraine, 90 percent of them with a criminal history.

The ownership of the historic factory, founded in 1944, is disputed by two Ukrainian oligarchs.
